Asia is attempting an energy transformation whilst confronting a new era of energy insecurity driven by geopolitical tensions and supply disruptions. As demand surges, driven particularly by the expanding power needs of the AI and digital infrastructure ecosystem, regional governments face difficult choices over their future energy mix. Can Asia access enough energy reliably and what portion of that energy can be low-carbon? Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has argued that “Canada has a tremendous opportunity to be the world’s leading energy superpower, in both clean and conventional energy" and so Canada appears to be one part of the answer to Asia's energy dilemma but in which fuels and to what degree?
This seminar explores how competing pressures are reshaping Asia’s energy landscape and where Canada may fit within it. From oil, LNG, and LPG exports to nuclear energy, critical minerals, and renewable technologies, Canada is increasingly positioning itself as a diversified energy partner for the region. At the same time, infrastructure constraints, environmental pressures, and intensifying geopolitical competition complicate this ambition. In an increasingly fragmented and energy-hungry world, what role can Canada realistically play in powering Asia’s uncertain future?
